Mt. Washington, BC Canada
Trip Information
This is a day trip to the Mt. Washington Alpine Resort or Forbidden Plateau area to experience backcountry snowshoeing or hiking depending on snow conditions. The trip leaves from the resort's base area or trailhead and explores the local area and trails of Mt. Washington, neighboring Strathcona Provincial Park, or the Forbidden Plateau area. Introductory snowshoe lessons are provided by Vancouver Island University staff. You will be outside for the majority of the trip, especially if you have signed up for the Forbidden Plateau location, so please be prepared!
What to wear
- Appropriate warm clothing and footwear for the weather (dress in layers)
What to bring:
- Daypack
- Hiking Boots, or good winter boots
- Waterproof jacket or ski jacket and pants
- Warm gloves or mittens
- Toque or warm hat
- Water bottle
- Snacks & Lunch (or money for food)
- Extra socks for the bus ride back
- A sun hat or ball cap
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
Meeting Location:
VIU Gym Building 190 at 9 am
Trip Includes:
Transportation to and from Mount Washington, equipment and guided hike
VIU provides all the other required equipment. This includes: all snowshoe equipment, ski boots that you can wear for snowshoeing, trail passes, rain jackets, we even have a some snow pants, and safety equipment. If you prefer to use your own gear then please bring it with you.

How to Sign Up
Our activities are available to all current VIU Students. Sign up with us in person in Building 255.
You will need to have your:
- Student card,
- Proof of medical insurance (BC Care Card or Guard.me Insurance Policy)
- Payment (cash is currently the only method of payment for activities)
Hours & Locations for Signing Up with us:
Faculty of International Education Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm in Building 255, Second Floor Reception
Lunchtime Activity Information Desk Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 – 1 pm in Building 255 - First Floor Learning Commons
Waiver Form
Please read our general waiver form for VIU group activities in the attachment section below. All participants are required to read and sign the waiver before the start of the trip. We will provide a paper copy for you to read through again and sign the morning of the trip.
