International Student Scholarships and Awards

Rewarding you for your exceptional accomplishments

The following scholarships are available for new international students to Vancouver Island University, at the undergraduate level.

Students are considered for scholarships at the time of admission, based on their submitted transcripts and application supporting documents. The standard deadline for admission to most VIU programs is March 31st, and scholarship selections are determined 6 weeks after this closing date. A separate application for scholarships is not required, as students will be automatically considered if they meet the scholarship criteria.

Please note upon the Scholarships and Awards Committee's review, students can receive more than one entrance scholarship.

VIU World-Wide Entrance Scholarships

  • Number: Maximum 20 each year
  • Amount: $2,000 each
  • Criteria: Provided annually to exceptional new long-term academic undergraduate student applicants (not one semester Education Abroad or Exchange students). Students who come to VIU for ESL with conditional acceptance into an undergraduate program will be considered for these scholarships. Awarded to up to 20 of the top applicants entering in the Fall semester based on entering grades from submitted transcripts. No application necessary.

British Columbia High School International Excellence Entrance Scholarship

  • Number: Maximum 3 each year
  • Amount: $1,000 per year for up to 4 years of Academic study
  • Criteria: All International student applicants who have applied to attend VIU in their graduating year from a British Columbia High School with a Dogwood Certificate. Highest average in combined marks of English 12 (combined provincial and school mark), social Studies 11 and Math 11 (Principles or applications). Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary. Awarding of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year scholarships is dependent on retention of a GPA of 3 or better.

The High School at Vancouver Island University International Excellence Award

  • Number: Minimum 2 each year
  • Amount: $1,000 each
  • Criteria: Awarded to international student graduates of The High School at Vancouver Island University recognizing outstanding achievement in their final academic year of studies. No application necessary, awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University. 

VIU International Undergraduate Regional Scholarships

  • Number: Seven each year
  • Amount: $5,000 ($2,500 awarded for the first year of study and $2,500 for the second year)
  • 2018 Regions:
    • China - 1 scholarship
    • India - 1 scholarship
    • Eastern Europe/CIS* - 1 scholarship
    • Africa - 1 scholarship
    • Latin America - 1 scholarship
    • ASEAN ** - 1 scholarship
    • Open - 1 scholarship. The open scholarship is available to students from any nation outside of the countries already identified in the other Regional Scholarships.
  • Criteria: The scholarships are awarded to International students applying for entry into the first year of an undergraduate academic program. The award is based upon the entered grades from submitted High School transcripts. No application is necessary.

* CIS Countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan).

** ASEAN Countries ( Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Brunei). 

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Entrance Scholarship

Full Program Scholarships

  • Number: Maximum 3 per year
  • Amount: $1,000 per year for up to 4 years of Academic study
  • Criteria: Open to all International students who have graduated with an IB diploma. Selection is based upon highest average of combined marks from an IB school. Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary. Awarding of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year scholarships is dependent on retention of a GPA of 3 or better.

Entry Scholarships

  • Number: All IB Diploma holders receive this scholarship.
  • Amount: $1,000 each for the first year of study
  • Criteria: New International student graduates with an IB diploma. Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary.

British Columbia Offshore School Entrance Scholarship

  • Number: Maximum 2 each year
  • Amount: $1,000 each
  • Criteria: All international student graduates from BC Offshore schools are eligible. The awards will be given to the two students with the highest combined scores on any two Grade 12 provincially examinable courses excluding their first language. Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary.

The following scholarships are available for continuing International students at Vancouver Island University. Unless otherwise indicated, the scholarship is awarded in November and applied to the student's second consecutive academic term. See individual scholarships for application details.

International Education Academic Excellence Scholarship

  • Number: Maximum 15 each year
  • Amount: $1,000 each
  • Criteria: Awarded to continuing full-time international undergraduate students demonstrating outstanding academic achievement in the previous academic year at VIU. No application necessary, awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University. Students can get the award annually if they meet the criteria.

VIU Peer Helper Award

  • Number: Minimum 2 each year
  • Amount: $1,000 tuition credit
  • Criteria: Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University to a current student who demonstrates commitment to on-campus volunteer service, peer support and personal leadership development through their involvement in the Peer Helper Program. Candidates must be enrolled and continuing in full-time ESL or academic studies, a GPA of "C" or higher in the previous semester. The award application requires Peer Helpers to have completed 30 hours of documented volunteer service within the program as well as submit a short essay. Peer Helpers are recruited annually and serve a minimum of an eleven-month term from February to January with a break during summer months.  

      Application forms will be emailed directly to active Peer Helpers by September 20th of each year.

VIU English Language Program - Academic Awards

  • Number: 8 Awards (maximum) of
    • 4 for Access/AP1/AP2/AP3
    • 4 for AP4/AP5/Graduate Preparation
    • Amount: $1,000 each
    • Criteria: Based on highest grade point average and a minimum of B (72%)

Awarded to international VIU English Language Program students in recognition of outstanding academic achievement.  No application is necessary; awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University once a year in the Fall. One scholarship per student.

VIU English Language Program - Community Engagement Award

  • Number: 2 Awards (maximum)
  • Amount: $1,000 each
  • Criteria: Based on community engagement. Application required. Awarded as tuition credit to VIU

Awarded to VIU English Language Program students in recognition of outstanding community engagement. Application is necessary; awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University once a year in the fall. Contact ELC Department Chair for application form and instructions. One scholarship per student.

Outstanding International Student Awards

  • Number: 3 per year
  • Amount:
    • 1 - $2,000 award
    • 2 - $1,000 awards
  • Criteria: Awarded to continuing full-time international undergraduate students with a minimum of 3.0 grade point average and demonstrating outstanding campus and community achievements in the previous academic year at VIU. Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University. Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation and a letter outlining how volunteer work has had an impact on their lives.

VIU Outstanding International Student Athlete Award

  • Number: 2 per year
  • Amount: $1,000 each
  • Criteria: Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University to the top male & female international athletes of the year. The athletes must be playing on one of the VIU varsity teams.

Masako and Stanley Fukawa Scholarship

  • Number: 1 per year
  • Amount: $2,000 ($1000 awarded for the first year, and $1000 for the second year)
  • Criteria: Awarded to full time undergraduate 3-4 year international student with a cumulative GPA of (3.5) in the previous academic year; pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Arts, and declared a major in “Social Science”. Nominee to demonstrate activities in promoting social justice through community engagement. No application required, on the recommendation of the dean of social science. Awarded as a tuition credit for spring semester at Vancouver Island University.

Bursaries, Scholarships and Financial Aid

The following information is a summary of some of the Bursary & Scholarship options for students to explore.  Financial Aid is described below.

1. The VIU Career Services office: They offer assistance with career and work search, cover letter and resume development, interview preparation, and labour market information. They also have listings of on- and off-campus employment opportunities.

2. The central Financial Aid and Awards office will have useful information on their website for you. 
As you will see on their website, StudentAid BC and the Canada Student Loans are only available to Canadian Citizens or permanent residents. Unfortunately, there is no specific “Financial Aid” for international students here at VIU. However, Scholarships and Awards administered through the Financial Aid and Awards office may be open to you. You can create a “scholarship/award/bursary profile” from your student record and it will list those for which you may be eligible.

3. Scholarships and Awards administered through the Faculty of International Education (Scroll down to those listed under “Continuing Student Scholarships”.)

4. Government of Canada’s web page on Scholarships for International Students for external sources of funding for which you may be eligible.

5. Global Affairs Canada Explore this database by country of origin to find scholarships, fellowships or funding opportunities made available by Canadian federal government departments.

7. ScholarshipsCanada.com is a website that compiles many scholarships, student awards and bursaries. It also has a good list of tips on applying for these opportunities.
