CC Local Hikes: Elk Falls Provincial Park

Cultural Connections - Local Hikes

Join Cultural Connections as we head outdoors and explore some of the most scenic and awe-inspiring, local hiking trails throughout the Fall semester. We have selected 4 hikes that are based out of Nanaimo and 1 final hike that takes you to Elk Falls Provincial Park, located 2 hours north of VIU. This program runs from early March until late April on select Fridays from 1:30PM - 4PM. The cost to join is only $2.00, with the exception of our Elk Falls Provincial Park Adventure - costing $10.00 due to the extended duration of the hike (overall time). Please sign up in advance.

Elk Falls Provincial Park

Elk Falls Provincial Park, on central Vancouver Island, is a popular destination. The main attractions are camping, salmon fishing, and an incredible 25-meter (89-foot) waterfall. Located near the town of Campbell River, Elk Falls is a great hike for all skill levels. The powerful waterfall and suspension bridge make for a fun outing, and the old-growth forest makes for a serene setting.

In 2015, an impressive suspension bridge was added to the park, just above Elk Falls. The suspension bridge opened on Elk Falls Provincial Park’s 75th anniversary.

Because the river is diverted for hydroelectric generation, the flow of Elk Falls remains fairly constant throughout the year. However, it may be flowing slightly stronger in the springtime and after strong rains.
