CC Road Trips - Learn to Cross Country Ski & Snowshoe with Outdoor Rec

Trip Information

This is an introductory cross country skiing and snowshoeing activity at Mt. Washington Alpine Resort. The activity starts at VIU and we bus up to the ski resort for our day together. In the morning you will be given an introductory skiing lesson. From there, we will head out for a short ski and explore the trails before we return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch we switch equipment types and you can try snowshoeing as we explore the beautiful eastern side of Strathcona Provincial Park. Introductory snowshoe lessons are provided by Vancouver Island University staff and you will be outside for the majority of the activity so please be prepared. VIU provides transport, equipment, trail passes and instruction. 

What to Wear:

  • Appropriate warm clothing and footwear for the weather (dress in layers) 

What to Bring:

  • Daypack
  • Hiking Boots, or good winter boots
  • Waterproof jacket or ski jacket and pants
  • Warm gloves or mittens
  • Toque or warm hat
  • Water bottle
  • Snacks & Lunch 
  • Extra socks for the bus ride back
  • A sun hat or ball cap
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen

Meeting Location: 

VIU Gym Building 190 at 9 am

Trip Includes:

Transportation to and from Mount Washington, equipment, instruction and GOOD TIMES! 

VIU provides all the other required equipment. This includes: all snowshoe equipment, all cross-country skiing equipment, ski boots that you can wear for snowshoeing, trail passes, rain jackets, we even have a some snow pants, and safety equipment. If you prefer to use your own gear then please bring it with you.

How to Sign Up

Our activities are available to all current VIU Students. Sign up with us in person in at the Front Reception Desk on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 1pm in Building 255 - Second Floor. 

You will need to have your:

  1. Student card,
  2. Proof of medical insurance (BC Care Card or Guard.me Insurance Policy)
  3. Payment (cash is currently the only method of payment for activities)
