Trip Information
Whether you are new to paddle sports or new to Nanaimo - this is a great opportunity for you to get on local waters at a low cost! This session offers an introduction to the sport of recreational canoeing and kayaking. The Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club (NCKC) instructors will cover entering the kayak/canoe, proper body position, holding the paddle, basic paddle strokes, proper lifting techniques when carrying the boats, and safety procedures while on the water. The session carries on with a guided paddle tour offering individual help as needed.
What to Wear:
- Active wear or bathing suits (assume that you will get wet)
- Secure wet footwear, if you don't have booties or water shoes then wear something like running shoes that you don't mind getting wet
- Hat
What to Bring:
- Water bottle
- Sunglasses (polarized - if you have them)
- Sunscreen and lip balm
- Snacks
- Spare set of clothing (must be dry on the bus)
- Towel
- A backpack to carry all your items (can leave them inside club)
- Drybag - if you chose to bring a camera/phone it is AT YOUR OWN RISK
- Rain coat (in case it rains)
Meeting Location:
VIU Building 255, Main Lobby (second floor) at 2:30 pm
Trip Includes:
Round-trip transportation to VIU, kayaking and canoeing, paddles, pfd’s and instruction.

How to Sign Up
Our activities are available to all current VIU Students. Sign up with us in person in at the Front Reception Desk on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 1pm in Building 255 - Second Floor.
You will need to have your:
- Student card,
- Proof of medical insurance (BC Care Card or Guard.me Insurance Policy)
- Payment (cash is currently the only method of payment for activities)
Waiver Form
Please read our general waiver form for VIU group activities in the attachment section below. All participants are required to read and sign the waiver before the start of the trip. We will provide a paper copy for you to read through again and sign the morning of the trip.
