A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is the sticker in your passport that permits you to enter Canada. Depending on your citizenship, you may need either a
- Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or
- Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA is valid for 5 years)
- American (US) citizens or permanent residents do not need either
Your TRV must be valid when you enter Canada. Once you are in Canada, it can expire. If you travel abroad and want to return, you must make sure you have a valid TRV. Some students like to maintain a valid Visa in case they have to return home for emergency reasons.
Students apply for TRV online, once it is approved IRCC will request you to send your passport to Ottawa with instructions. eTA holders does not require renewal of their digital visa until 5 years passes.

- Check your passport expiry date

- Gather the required documents
- Attend an Immigration drop-in session to have your application reviewed.
You can apply for visa renewal (TRV) within Canada only after renewal of your study permit.
- Online: processing time is shorter and passport will be sent only after IRCC requests it via Canada Post.
Family members apply for a Canadian VISA based on their own merits. Student can support family members application by providing them with:
- Letter of Invitation as per IRCC template
- Student confirmation of Enrollment
- A copy of student study permit
- US Visas
- US Visa Presentation (US Consulate General - Vancouver)
