International Student Advising: Academic, Immigration, and Counselling

Studying in a foreign institution is a challenging and rewarding experience. VIU has International Student Advisors who provide the support necessary to achieve their educational goals and have a successful study experience. They support ESL, undergraduate and graduate students by providing information on:

  • Programs and course selection
  • Class scheduling and registration (for undergraduate and ESL students)
  • Personal advising and counseling
  • Educational goals
  • Medical insurance
  • Scholarships and awards
  • Study skills
  • Referrals to resources
  • Living in Canada

Advisors take confidentiality very seriously and follow the guidelines of Canada's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Degree Advisors

Students are encouraged to meet with their Degree Advisor early to declare their Major/Minors. VIU's GPS helps you look at options but is not an official declaration of your Major/Minors. You need to meet with your Degree Advisor to accomplish this. Degree Advisors can link you with enrichment opportunities relevant to your degree focus (experiential, volunteer, research, leadership, student development).

Immigration Assistance

To assist you with your study permit extension, work/co-op permit and/or visa application, refer to our immigration website. If you need further assistance, come to an Immigration Drop-in Session to meet with Immigration advisors (Registered Canadian Immigration Consultants).
