Get Oriented!

One of the most important first steps as a new student is to attend orientation. It is a chance to make new friends and collect information about how to make your transition to VIU a successful one.

As an international student, you will attend one of the following orientations depending on your area of studies when you arrive:

This orientation is part of Rock VIU - a campus-wide welcome event in the Fall semester. Information on these events will be sent to your email.

Preparing for Orientation

When to Arrive? We recommend planning your travel so that you arrive at least 2 - 3 days before your orientation. It is important to have time to adjust and get settled before your first day.

What to Expect? You will receive important information and resources to help you have a successful student experience. By attending orientation, you will receive:

  • An orientation package
  • Your Student ID Card
  • Help setting up your student computer accounts (Discovery Account & Student Record)
  • A campus tour with peer helpers
  • Important information on housing, safety, medical insurance, study permits and visas, and more
  • A warm welcome from VIU current students & staff!
  • A chance to make new friends before starting classes

Where to Go? All new international students must check-in at the Nanaimo Campus Building 255.

Questions about your orientation?

New students will receive an invitation by email within a month of their arrival date, with information about where and when their orientation will take place. For questions about the International Student Orientations, contact our International Student Advising Team: advising@viu.ca.
