PRE-DEPARTURE Procedures for VIU Students

VIU students should familiarize themselves with the Government of Canada Travel Advice and Advisories specific to their travel destination.

VIU students will not normally be permitted to travel to destinations that the Government of Canada has classified as “avoid non-essential travel” or as “avoid all travel” as described in the reports for a VIU-sanctioned activity.

All VIU students participating in university-sanctioned international travel are required to complete Pre-Departure training which provides key resources for effective travel planning, safety and risk assessment, health and wellness, intercultural competence, and emergency preparedness.  Please contact VIU Education Abroad for support through this process: edabroad@viu.ca

VIU students are required to complete the following a minimum of 30 days prior to departure:

Academic units may have additional required documentation such as Work Term Record (Work-Integrated Learning) or registration in appropriate academic courses. Contact your supervising faculty member for more information.

VIU Students participating in university-sanctioned international travel are required to enrol in VIU’s Travel Registry prior to departing Canada.  Registration enables the University to monitor student safety, update students on travel advisories, locate and provide assistance in case of emergency.

All VIU students are required to purchase and provide proof of Guard.Me Travel Medical Insurance for the duration of their VIU-sanctioned activity abroad.  Supplemental travel insurance offered through a student’s parent, spouse, employer or the VIU Student Union are not acceptable forms of Travel Medical insurance.

It is important for students to review and familiarize themselves with the policy including coverage for medical services, exclusions, pre-existing conditions, high risk activities, claims and medical emergencies (HINT: this information is also covered in the Pre-Departure Training!).

A student may decide they need to purchase supplementary insurance, beyond the coverage provided by Guard.Me, based on their individual needs and medical history.
