Hawaii Field School 2023

Hospitality Management Hawaii Field School

Field School Dates: April 29-May 19, 2023

Program Overview

As a high density tourism destination, the island of Oahu provides the perfect back drop to explore the pressures that result from balancing visitor impacts and expectations with the sustainable and regenerative aspects of Socio-Cultural, Economic and Environmental challenges of this island state.

The purpose of this field school is to provide VIU students, with priority given to FOM students, with an opportunity for experiential learning focused on an examination the interaction between a destination’s natural resources, culture and the resort and tourism industry. Study will focus upon exploration of related destination issues and the socio-cultural and environmental factors that challenge the sustainability of tourism in this region. This field school allows for a deep exploration of these and related issues.

Themes

There are three broad themes that provide the foundation to this field school:
1. the history and cultural and native heritage of the islands;
2. the tourism industry infrastructure and system in terms of a sustainable or regenerative tourist destination;
3. the workings of the resort industry.

A total of 3 distinct, yet interrelated, courses will be delivered in conjunction in a mutually supportive manner, and completed during the 2023 Hawaiian Field School; some pre-departure academic work, classroom sessions and student presentations during January to April; in-country activities, research and scholarship during the May field school; and final and concluding reflective, analytical, and synthesis submission which will be partially begun during the field school, and completed and submitted prior to 15 June.
