Program Overview
The purpose of this field school is to provide Vancouver Island University Faculty of Management students with an opportunity for experiential learning focused on an examination the interaction between a destination’s culture, resort industry and its tourism industry.
Study will focus upon exploration of related destination issues and the social-cultural focus of a destination’s culture. This field school allows for a deep exploration of these and related issues. There are three broad themes that provide the foundation to this field school:
- History and cultural heritage of the islands
- Tourism industry infrastructure in terms of a tourist destination
- Some of the workings of the resort industry.

Cost
Field School Fee: $2,595
This fee does not include tuition, airfare, incidentals, or medical insurance. Additional fees will apply for some activities.

2. Pay the Non-Refundable Deposit (once acceptance is received from Field School Leader)

Eligibility and Selection
Student Eligibility
All students currently enrolled in Hospitality Management or Tourism Management and Recreation are invited to apply to the field school. Some School of Business students may be considered.
- Course of pre-study: January 2017 to April 2017 inclusive
- Travel in May is contingent on the completion of all pre-study requirements to a minimum C+
Selection Process
Overall, selection to the field school team will be based on a combination of the following:
- Grade Point Average (GPA); 2.33 or better is preferred with GPAs of less than 2.33 considered based on exceptional references
- Two (2) faculty references (supply faculty’s name and email)
- Completion of application, including a statement of interest.
Students in years 4, 3, 2 will be given priority in a descending order.
In the event that there are more qualified students than spaces available, preference will be given to those who have completed and submitted their application on a first-come, first-served basis.
Travel Information
A valid passport with an expiry date no earlier than November 2017 will be needed. Visas may be required for international students. A copy of your valid passport (and visa) will be required in advance of travel.
A copy of a valid insurance policy is also required.

Payment
Field school deposits and payments are made online through VIU Student Record. A charge will be applied, with payment required by a specified date. VIU does not accept credit card payments for field schools.

Funding
- International Education Stipend - The International Education Department at VIU encourages International Mobility by providing eligible VIU Students with an International Education Award of $350. Conditions apply.
- StudentAid BC Students on the BC student assistance Program (BCSAP) may be able to continue their funding to include International Mobility. Those not currently receiving BCSAP funding, may be able to apply. Contact Financial Aid in Building 200 for more information.
- One World International Scholarship Program - The overall purpose of this scholarship is to increase the participation by undergraduate students from public post-secondary institutions in BC in academic, experiential and work-related study abroad programs outside Canada to develop a more globally literate citizenry and workforce in the province. Scholarships will range from $1000 to $3500. Read the eligibility criteria carefully before applying.
