All Nations Reggae Symposium: Panel Discussion

A diverse panel of reggae artists will discuss their personal connection to reggae, the genre’s spread and appeal worldwide, and its central themes of Black consciousness and identity, social issues, harmony with nature, and anti-colonial resistance. The discussion will be moderated by Simon Schachner, VIU Intercultural Program Coordinator and host of Rebel Music International on CHLY 101.7 FM.

Film: The Story of Roma People

This film explores the role the European Union has played in stigmatizing Roma people. Today in both East and West, extreme-right wing parties - but not solely these parties - are using the Roma as a tool to rise to power. What weight does the EU carry in relation to the Nation states? And more importantly, what are its values?

Richard Brown, veteran reggae drummer and producer, will speak about the role technology has played in the development of reggae music and its subgenres. Richard brings both personal experience in being active in live and recorded reggae since the 1980s, as well as observations as a fan of some of the genre’s technical pioneers.

Planes, Drones and Snowmobiles: Measuring Snowpack in Coastal British Columbia in the 21st Century

On Vancouver Island, snow is often viewed as something that happens in the mountains and rarely affects our day-to-day lives. This presentation by Dr. Bill Floyd, Research Hydrologist with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resource Operations, will provide an overview of the current snow measurement network and technology used in BC, the importance of snow to people and the economy, and how we can use this data to adapt to climate change.
