Insight from India: Using a Global Lens to Understand Canada’s Waste Problem

Before travelling to India, I hoped to learn something from my experience that would be useful to bring into my future classrooms. Upon returning home and reflecting, I was surprised that I could learn and gain so much from a short three-week period. This blog post will cover the topic of waste, and how my experience in India gave me insight into my future units on climate change.

Bringing a bit of Canadian Culture to India

As part of the Post-Baccalaureate Education program at VIU, I had the opportunity to complete one of my teaching practicums abroad. I chose to do a practicum in India, without thinking too much about what would be waiting for me on the other side. However, I quickly learnt just how different the same profession can be in other countries, as well as the importance of adaptability and flexibility in the teaching profession.

Studying abroad is an experience of a lifetime. Having the opportunity to study in a foreign country, taking in a new culture, embracing the unknown and maybe even learning a new language is a priceless adventure that unfortunately comes at a price. With that being said, regardless of cost, your journey to global education may be closer than you think.

The Power of Perspective

Becoming a global citizen requires patience, tolerance and experience which all depend on the power of embracing different perspectives. Being able to accept and learn from different beliefs and practices allows us to adapt and work together towards global goals such as gender equality.
