Homestay Application



To apply to participate as a student in the Homestay Program please complete the Homestay Student Profile 2020-2021 and submit to along with the signed Homestay Student Letter of Agreement 2020-2021.pdf

Applications for Fall 2020 are accepted on an ongoing basis. Please allow a minimum of 4 weeks for processing; 6 weeks recommended.

Late applications are subject to a $125 processing fee.

The designated Move-in and Move-out dates are assigned by the Homestay Program. These dates correspond to the English Language and Academic Program Calendars. If you are planning to arrive to Nanaimo outside the listed move-in dates, please email

Arrival considerations due to COVID-19

The Canadian Government has enacted the Quarantine Act which requires international travellers entering Canada to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival. The VIU Homestay Program has developed a self-isolation program in collaboration with the VIU Student Residences. Students will be able to complete their self-isolation at the VIU Student Residences before moving into their assigned VIU homestay.

When indicating your move-in and move-out dates, select the options that most closely match your intended plans. You will need to submit your travel itinerary as part of the registration process for the self-isolation program.

 APPLICATION CHECKLIST: Send the following to
  • Completed Student Profile 
  • Signed Letter of Agreement 
  • Signature of Parents/Guardians if under 19 years old 
  • Homestay Fee Payment 
  • Student Arrival Information
  • Self-Isolation Request Form
 Students will receive Host Family information no earlier than three weeks (15 business days) before the Move-in Date.

The Homestay Student Profile should be completed by the student, and submitted to the Homestay Office no later than 6 weeks before the student's arrival to VIU or by the required deadline, applications processed after the deadline will be assessed an administrative fee. Please complete this application as honestly as possible; the information provided by the student will assist the Homestay Office to make the best match possible with a host family. It is very important that the student's email is clearly written on the profile, as well as the agent's contact information, if applicable. Host families and students are to communicate with each other before the student arrives in Nanaimo.

Minimum 6 weeks before anticipated arrival: Submit your Homestay Student Profile and all applicable fees (application fee and deposit) to the VIU Homestay Office.

2 - 3 weeks before anticipated arrival: The VIU Homestay Office will provide you with a Homestay Match Letter outlining the information of your assigned homestay host and other program information.

Applications received with less than 6 weeks processing time will be assessed an administrative fee.
