April 2018 / January 2019 / October 2019

Feedback from previous homestay host trainings indicated that host families would like an opportunity to explore more case studies and scenarios. Hosts will be able to submit questions or cases that they would like discussed before the session. Hosts will be able to learn how to problem solve and address potential challenges they might face and determine the supports available. Staff from the Homestay department, counselling, and advising teams will be there to explore cases through roundtable interactions.

Many of our host families host students who are part of the English Language Centre (ELC). One of the significant roles of the homestay placement is to help students develop and practice their English Language skills outside of the school environment. This workshop is designed and facilitated by Faculty from the English Language Centre, in hopes to
provide homestay hosts with practical ways of communicating with English Language learners and resolving communication difficulties that may arise.

Facilitators: Sylvia Arnold and Rita Mizuno, Faculty English Language Centre

This fun nuts and bolts workshop will look at different ways that hosts can prepare their home environment for a student. We will be looking at wear and tear, preventing damages, move-out process, talking with your insurance companies,
creative household guidelines and more. Hosts will leave with a resource kit and checklist.

How we solve difficult problems, how we argue and how we “make up” are learned in the groups in which we live during our formative years and modified based on specific experiences we have during our lifetime. Recognizing patterns in our own problem solving/conflict resolution style helps us improve our personal relationships with others because it increases understanding. In this session participants will complete the Intercultural Conflict Styles Inventory and explore different responses to conflict while acknowledging cultural differences.
