Professional Baking & Pastry Field School to Paris
Program Overview
Field School Dates: January 27 - February 11, 2018
In addition to learning about french culinary and baking culture, the program will also include travel to Belgium to visit the Callebaut chocolate factory and the Puratos Bakery Ingredient Innovation Centre. In France, participants will visit the Lesaffre Yeast Company and attend Europain - A world bakery, pastry, ice cream, chocolate and confectionery trade show & exhibition. Other activities may include visits to bakeries, patisseries, and schools. There will also be two free days in Paris to enjoy the sights.
Field School Application Procedure
Deadline to Apply: Monday, October 2 at 11:59pm PST (UPDATED).
Late Applications will be accepted based on space. A waitlist will be created if necessary.
To apply to the VIU Baking Field School, please follow these steps:
1. Complete the Statement of Interest Application Fillable Form *

Once accepted to the field school:
3. Those who are accepted will receive notice by email and will be will be required to make a non-refundable $500 deposit to confirm a seat in the program. The deposit and subsequent payments are payable through the VIU Student Record System. *
4. All participants are responsible for completing a pre-departure checklist, which includes submitting travel documents to VIU Education Abroad, such as passports, flight itineraries, medical insurance, etc. Instructions will be sent by email to the address on your student record.
*Note: Participation in a VIU Field School Abroad requires that all participants hold a valid VIU Student Record. For any participant who does not currently hold a valid Student Record, see instructions below.
Community Members & Non-VIU Student Participants:
This field school welcomes applications & participation from community members, partner institutions and faculty.
These participants who do not hold a valid VIU Student Record will be required to apply to VIU and pay the application fee ($39.30) in order to be added to the program, receive a student number and make payments for field school fees.
Please follow these steps to secure a VIU Student Record:
- Apply to VIU online through the Education Planner BC Portal
- Create an account and complete the Profile
- Select Vancouver Island University as the Institution
- Create an application, and select the following fields to identify the program:
- Category: "Applying to an Undergraduate Program"
- Subject Area: "Professional Development & Training"
- Term: "Next Available"
- Program: "Field School/Field Trip Experience (pre-approval required)
- Complete the application by paying the application fee.

Field School Fees & Costs:
The Field School fees will include:
- Return air travel between Vancouver and Paris
- Shared accommodation (hostel shared dorm)
- Most breakfasts
- Program-related travel in Europe
- Day trips and excursions
- Travel medical insurance
Other costs to participants, not included in field school fees:
- Meals other than those specified above (including lunches and dinners)
- Travel between Nanaimo and Vancouver International Airport (non-VIU participants will be expected to make their own way to YVR)
- Passport & visa expenses (if applicable)
- Personal expenses
- VIU application fee (for community members and participants from partner institutions)
Payment of Fees
Field school deposits & payments are made online through the VIU Student Record. A charge will be applied, with payment required by a specified date. VIU does not accept credit card payments for field schools.

Funding
- International Education Stipend: Earn funding for VIU Education Abroad programs by engaging in on campus programs and events with an international focus.
- StudentAid BC: Students receiving BC student loans may be able to continue their funding during Education Abroad activities. Those not currently receiving funding, may be able to apply. Contact Financial Aid in building 200 for more information.
- One World International Scholarship Program - The overall purpose of this scholarship is to increase the participation by undergraduate students from public post-secondary institutions in B.C. in academic, experiential and work-related study abroad programs outside Canada to develop a more globally literate citizenry and workforce in the province. Scholarships will range from $1000 to $3500. Read the eligibility criteria carefully before applying.

Passports and Visas
Passports: All participants must have a valid passport good for six months after your return. Applications for Canadian passports are available at Canada Post offices or on-line (www.ppt.gc.ca).
Visas: Canadian passport holders do not require a visa for short-term travel to Europe.
Schengen Visa Information: Non-Canadian passport holders may require a visa.
International students going abroad must make sure their TRV and Study Permits are up-to-date and won't expire while they are abroad.
Students will be responsible for applying for and securing their own visas (where appropriate). Education Abroad will help by preparing a package of supporting documents (confirming itinerary, accommodations, enrollment, etc). Instructions will follow to approved participants in the Fall semester.
