Washington Alpine Resort or Forbidden Plateau area to experience backcountry snowshoeing. The trip leaves from the resort’s base area or trailhead and explores the local area and trails of Mt. Washington and neighboring Strathcona Provincial Park, or Forbidden Plateau. Introductory snowshoe lessons are provided by Vancouver Island University staff. You will be outside for the majority of the trip, especially if you have signed up for the Forbidden Plateau location, so please be prepared!       What to wear: Appropriate warm clothing and footwear for the weather What to bring: Daypack Hiking Boots, or good winter boots Waterproof jacket or ski jacket and pants Warm gloves or mittens Toque or warm hat Water bottle Snacks & Lunch (or money for food) Extra socks for the bus ride back A sun hat or ball cap Sunglasses Sunscreen   Meeting Location:  VIU Gym Building 190 at 9:00 am Trip Includes: Transportation to and from Mount Washington, equipment and guided hike VIU provides all the other required equipment. This includes: all snowshoe equipment, ski boots that you can wear for snowshoeing, trail passes, rain jackets, we even have a some snow pants, and safety equipment. If you prefer to use your own gear then please bring it with you.   Policies, Health & Safety We have an ongoing commitment to ensure the safety and quality of our trips, with trained and responsible student leaders, staff and community partners. Before you sign-up, please check out our policies & procedures for more information about how to prepare for a trip, as well as our cancellation policy.   How to Sign Up Our activities are available to all current VIU Students. Sign up with us in person in Building 255. You will need to have your: Student card, Proof of medical insurance (BC Care Card or Allianz Global Assistance Insurance Policy) Payment (cash is currently the only method of payment for activities)   Hours & Locations for Signing Up with us: Faculty of International Education Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:00pm in Building 255, 2nd Floor Reception. Lunchtime Activity Sign Up Booth Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12pm – 1pm in Building 255 - 1st Floor Learning Commons.   Waiver Form Please read our general waiver form for VIU group activities in the attachment section below.
