The Deep Bay Marine Field Station supports both pure and applied coastal and marine research activities related to: sustainable shellfish aquaculture development; preservation of coastal ecosystems; and inter-disciplinary projects involving local communities. We also open up the Field Station to the public so that we can educate about important issues related to sustainability of coastal communities. Intertidal Beach Tour description: Dip our giant beach seine into the Salish Sea and pull it ashore to discover the amazing life living just beneath the water’s surface! We will find a variety of animals such as pipe fish, shiner perch, crabs and shrimp. Spend time exploring the beach at low tide and go on a scavenger hunt, conduct an experiment or complete an intertidal survey. What to wear: Bring clothes for warm and cold weather A warm sweater and a light jacket (waterproof jacket if possible) Warm pants (if you have waterproof pants you may want to bring them) Appropriate footwear (running shoes, hiking boots, or gum boots) The beach is always wet, and there is no way to avoid getting your shoes wet on the walk on the beach. Also bringing a rain coat or hat depending on the weather (as we will be outside!) What to bring: A change of socks, shoes, and pants: your clothes may get wet Water bottle  Snacks Money for shopping ( at the Market) A small camera Extra food and snack if you would like (Lunch is provided) A warm hat or toque & gloves Meeting Location:  VIU Opgaard Bus Loop at 10:00 am Policies, Health & Safety We have an ongoing commitment to ensure the safety and quality of our trips, with trained and responsible student leaders, staff and community partners.   • Bring clothes for warm and cold weather
